Rules of the game
You'll find the rules suggested here in your living room.
Shuffleboard is a game of skill and precision. The aim is to slide the pucks and position them in the scoring areas while preventing the opponent from scoring. A set of skittles brings a bowling variant to the table.
- Setting up the game
- Each player or team has 4 pucks of a distinct colour.
- The game is generally played in 15-point games, 21 points or more depending on the variant chosen.
- Sequence of events
- Service and first throw
- The two teams position themselves on the same side of the table and take it in turns to throw a puck.
- The players then alternate shots until all the pucks are played
- Aim of the game
- The aim is to position your pucks as far away as possible on the table, in the dot zones marked at the end of the tray.
- Opposing pucks can be cleared by hitting them
- Service and first throw
- End of round and scoring
- At the end of a round, everyone switches sides and the team that won the previous round starts. Points are scored according to these criteria:
- Only the most advanced pucks of the same colour score points, so only one team can score a round.
- A puck must be entirely within a scoring zone to be valid: zone 1 = 1 point, zone 2 = 2 points, zone 3 = 3 points.
- If a puck passes the end of the table without falling, it is worth 4 points.
- If a puck falls off the table or does not pass the centre line of the table, it does not score any points.
- The score of the round is marked using the abacus in the colour of the winning team's pucks: 1 silver ball = 1 point, 1 black or red ball = 10 points.
- At the end of a round, everyone switches sides and the team that won the previous round starts. Points are scored according to these criteria:

Setting up defensive barriers An essential tip for beginners to shuffleboard: use your pucks strategically to create obstacles for your opponent. Rather than just aiming for the three-point zone, think about how your puck can hinder your opponent's chances of scoring. Once you've earned your points, use your next turn to consolidate your position. Place another puck slightly forward to create a difficult angle for your opponent, protecting your score while forcing him to defend.

Control the speed and angles of your shots. In shuffle, precision is essential. Start by practising finding a consistent, comfortable throw force for each shot. Concentrate on your angles. The table is slightly curved along its length on both sides, allowing for rounding trajectories. Use the full width of the board to launch your puck and maximise your options, avoiding focusing solely on direct shots.
